A KLEVER APPROACH TO DECARBONIZATION

“Decarbonization” is turning into a fan favorite in realm sustainability. At this point, most companies have already begun addressing decarbonization strategies specific to their industry. In digital advertising, this strategy targets media decarbonization.

Media decarbonization is defined as “significant reduction in the carbon intensity of media agencies’ output.” Actions involve reducing the carbon footprint linked to the digital media industry, specifically focused on how media is produced, distributed, and consumed.

THE DECARBONIZATION DILEMMA 

While the goal of decarbonization is clear, the path to achieving it is fraught with challenges. The media and advertising industry plays a significant role in producing carbon emissions — a whopping 2.3 to 3.7 percent of global CO₂ emissions. With the growing popularity of streaming services and access to digital content at a high speed, those numbers are projected to rise.

Additionally, fossil fuels are a major setback to decarbonization. Digital media's reliance on fossil fuels — from data centers to commercial operations — is to blame. Looking at renewable energy alternatives such as solar, wind, or hydropower isn’t as cut and dry as it should be. These solutions are often expensive, lack proper infrastructure, and present logistical obstacles — indicating that achieving decarbonization is unlikely to happen in the very near future.  

Despite the various challenges, many organizations are making remarkable and creative progress in their decarbonization efforts.
